Ulla-Karin Schön, PhD, is a social worker and professor of social work with research expertise in mental health and disability services. Her work centers on recovery-oriented care, with a focus on user participation, social inclusion and shared decision-making. A central theme in her research is co-production with experts by experience, which she sees as a foundation for both scholarship and professional practice. Dr. Schön has experience with participatory action research with children, adolescents, and adults.
In recent years, Dr. Schön has led interdisciplinary research projects on user involvement, person-centered social practices, and the use of digital tools to enhance client and patient participation. She also studies strategies for implementing new interventions in social services and healthcare. In her teaching, Dr. Schön focuses on mental health, disabilities, user involvement, and psychosocial perspectives, with the aim of connecting research insights to practical, real-world applications.
Dr. Schön is a Professor of Social Work at Stockholm University, Sweden, and during the 2025–2026 academic year, she holds a Visiting Professor position at FAU.
