This eight-week course will introduce the participant to the basic concepts of Legal Nurse Consulting, including terminology common to litigation, the role the nurse consultant might perform in a variety of settings, report writing and documentation, participation in trials and hearings, and performing legal research.
This comprehensive eight-week course introduces the foundational concepts of Legal Nurse Consulting, covering:
- Terminology common to litigation
- Participation in trials and hearings
- Elements of case review and triage
- Legal research methods
- Report writing and documentation
- The legal nurse consultant’s role in various settings
Additional topics include starting an independent consulting practice or working within an established business.
Participants will:
- Conduct an interview with a legal professional (e.g., LNC, attorney, risk manager, or adjuster) and prepare a presentation.
- Research a legal issue and present findings.
Graduates may choose to sit for the Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC) exam, a separate certification test for experienced registered nurses. However, the LNCC exam is not required to practice as a legal nurse consultant.

This program is open to Registered Nurses (RNs) with at least three years of clinical nursing experience.
Application Requirements:
- A completed application form
- A copy of your RN license
- Proof of three or more years of clinical nursing experience (e.g., employer verification letter)
- Schedule: Offered twice per year (April and October)
- Tuition: $1,000 - receive 10% off when three or more colleagues from the same organization enroll together. Please email legalstudies@fau.edu to arrange payment/discount.
- Certificate: Program graduates receive a certificate of completion and 40 continuing education credit hours

- Accepted applicants will receive registration and payment instructions
- Payment must be completed at least one week before classes begin
- To cancel your registration, email legalstudies@fau.edu at least 48 hours before the course begins
- Full refunds (minus a $20 processing fee) are available for timely cancellations
- Refunds are not available after the first week of classes
- Florida Atlantic reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances; in such cases, a full refund will be processed within 15 business days
Anita N. Blowers, Ph.D.
Director of Legal Studies
Dr. Anita N. Blowers is a Teaching Professor and Director of Legal Studies in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University, and Associate Professor Emerita in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the University at Albany, State University of New York.
Dr. Blowers’ research explores elder abuse and neglect, older adults in the criminal justice system, sentencing practices, and criminal justice policy. She also engages in scholarship on teaching and learning, with a particular focus on student outcomes and assessment in higher education. Her work has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of criminal justice and law, and she has written book chapters published in collaborative academic works.
In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Blowers has held numerous administrative and academic leadership roles, focusing on curriculum design, program innovation, and efforts to improve student outcomes. She has played a key role in developing cross-campus collaborations that align academic and student affairs, promoting a cohesive and student-focused educational experience.
Alejandra Quintero
Program Coordinator
Alejandra Quintero serves as the Program Coordinator for the Legal Studies Paralegal Program at Florida Atlantic University, bringing over 20 years of experience in academic support services. With a strong background in administration and management, she plays a key role in guiding students and supporting the program’s day-to-day operations.
Alejandra holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Santo Tomás de Aquino in Colombia and a Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership from Florida Atlantic University.
Outside of her professional life, Alejandra enjoys spending time with her family and pets, as well as exploring new places through travel and hiking.
Genifer Johnson, DHA, MSN, RN
Dr. Johnson is a professional registered nurse, and has practiced in adult critical care, perinatal critical care, perinatal nursing, home health nursing, case management, and risk management. She has been practicing as a legal nurse consultant since 1995, working as in-house and as an independent consultant on litigation from discovery through settlement/mediation and trial.
Her interest in risk management led to a decision to pursue a doctorate in health administration. Her dissertation study focused on the nursing process as a factor in allegations against nurses involved in malpractice lawsuits.
Dr. Johnson has taught nursing at many levels, including practical nursing, associate degree nursing, baccalaureate degree nursing, and graduate degree nursing levels. Her clinical practice has taken her from the Midwest to the Pacific islands and now to Florida. She has been involved in teaching legal nurse consulting for Florida Atlantic University since 2011.
