Florida Atlantic University’s Sameer Hinduja, Ph.D., professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice – within the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice – and co-founder of the Cyberbullying Research Center, was recently tapped by the Alaska state legislature to review and advise on a draft bill targeting digital harassment and nonconsensual digital impersonation. Dr. Hinduja was contacted by the chief of staff to Representative David Nelson (AK-R), who cited his expertise as highlighted in a recent Associated Press article. The bill, prompted by urgent concerns over emerging technologies and social media trends, seeks to address the growing threat of “nudification” and other forms of online abuse.
Dr. Hinduja spoke with Rep. Nelson’s team earlier this week, offering substantive feedback and helping revise the draft bill. “It’s an honor to contribute my expertise to Alaska’s legislative efforts on such a critical issue,” Dr. Hinduja said. “Being able to help shape policy that protects individuals from digital harm is deeply meaningful to me, and I’m grateful for the chance to serve in this way.” His involvement underscores the national impact of Florida Atlantic faculty, whose research and policy guidance are shaping community safety initiatives nationwide.
Dr. Hinduja’s internationally recognized work on youth, social media, and AI has made him a sought-after expert for policymakers, educators, and media outlets. “Dr. Hinduja’s leadership and commitment to protecting youth online exemplify the caliber of our faculty,” said Ryan Meldrum, Ph.D., professor and director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. “We are proud to see his expertise making a difference at the highest levels and advancing our mission of public service and research excellence.”
