Schmidt College of Science Launches New Agreement With Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine
Tuesday, Apr 15, 2025
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science is pleased to announce the launch of a new Guaranteed Interview Program with the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM). All undergraduate students and alumni who are on the pre-health track from any major within Florida Atlantic University and the Schmidt College of Science who meet OCOM’s requirements are eligible to apply.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for our talented students who are pursuing medical school,” stated Evonne Rezler, Ph.D., senior associate dean for Undergraduate Studies, Schmidt College of Science. “More than half of our undergraduate students are on the pre-health track and intend to pursue professional health programs. Now more than ever our students are stepping into the medical field to help meet the growing demand for doctors. This agreement will go a long way toward expanding their medical school options.”
The program will be available to all Florida Atlantic students and alumni each academic year who meet all OCOM general admission requirements. Among the criteria are a minimum Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score of 502 and grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 (both general and science), the completion of all OCOM required prerequisite courses, as well as a completed admission application to OCOM.
“This exciting partnership will leverage the strengths of both institutions, creating a collaborative environment that prepares undergraduates and graduate students for a successful career in the medical field, while contributing to the growth and development of both academic communities,” said Gina Jones, director of Office of Pre-Health Professions and Continuing Education in the Schmidt College of Science.
Currently, OCOM holds a Pre-Accreditation Status with the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). OCOM was granted Pre-Accreditation Status in 2023, and its target for full accreditation is 2028, which will require students to complete four years of education in order to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.).
Early interviews for OCOM are held from July through April, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Qualified students can apply as early as May of the year before entry. Students will be notified of OCOM’s decision within a few weeks.
Pre-Health Professions Committee interviews with the College of Science Pre-Health Professions Office are scheduled from mid-May through November.
