FAU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Awarded ASBMB Accreditation

Congratulations to the Schmidt College of Science’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry on receiving a provisional accreditation from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)! ASBMB is a national, independent organization that recognizes excellence in biochemistry and molecular biology education for undergraduate students. This is the first time the department has received this important designation.

An ASBMB-accredited program aims to provide a solid foundation of translatable core concepts in biochemistry and molecular biology. Students benefit from a rich curriculum that focuses on core BMB fundamentals which align with national standards and prepare them for a career in BMB. Students also receive a diverse learning experience, with a focus on communication, safety and ethics, internships, research opportunities and teamwork skills. Additionally, students could take an optional exam that would demonstrate their competence and be effectively used for graduate school or employment opportunities.

“We are very pleased to receive this significant distinction from ASBMB,” said Andrew Terentis, Ph.D., professor and department chair of FAU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “It will increase our national recognition, along with internal and external funding opportunities, as well as attract high-caliber students.”

The department intends to apply for a full accreditation from ASBMB in 2025.
