B.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry Track Awarded Full ASBMB Accreditation

For the first time, the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry track, within the Schmidt College of Science, has been granted a full American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) accreditation. In 2023, the college’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry received a three‑year provisional accreditation for the biochemistry track program, and it applied for full accreditation last year.

“An ASBMB accreditation represents national recognition of excellence and innovation in biochemistry and molecular biology education,” said Shailaja Allani, Ph.D., associate scientist, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and director of Florida Atlantic’s Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CMBB). “It demonstrates that our program emphasizes strong foundational knowledge, critical thinking and hands‑on laboratory experience.”

A full ASBMB accreditation ensures that the department’s biochemistry curriculum meets nationally recognized standards in biochemistry and molecular biology. Students who complete the program receive comprehensive training in core biochemical concepts, critical reasoning, scientific communication, teamwork, laboratory safety, as well as research ethics.

“Achieving ASBMB accreditation is a significant milestone for our program,” stated Andrew Terentis, Ph.D., professor and chair of the college’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “It confirms that our curriculum and hands‑on training meet the highest national standards and shows employers and graduate schools that our students are exceptionally well-prepared for the next step in their scientific careers.”

In addition, students will gain independent mentored research and internship experiences, which together will further strengthen students' preparation for graduate studies and careers in biochemistry and molecular biology.

“Accreditation also provides students with the option to take a national standardized exam, allowing them to demonstrate their academic competitiveness on a national stage, noted Allani.”
