Advisor Spotlights: Sierra Butler and Tanecia Powell

Over the last few months, academic advisors in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science have been hard at work to ensure that students start the new academic year smoothly. From helping students navigate degree plans, program requirements and career paths to providing resources for academic success, advisors play pivotal roles in the college.

Read on to learn more about two of the college’s amazing new advisors, Sierra Butler, who specializes in biology, medical biology, neuroscience and health science; and Tanecia Powell, who advises biological sciences, neuroscience and health science. Both women joined the advising team in April 2025.

Why did you choose to pursue advising as a career?

Butler: I have always enjoyed working in the field of education. Prior to advising, I worked in K-12 to promote and educate students about college, career and life readiness. Working as an advisor in a post-secondary institution seemed like a natural step forward in my career.

Powell: I wanted to be the kind of supportive person that I wish I had as a student—someone who listens, guides and helps others feel confident as they navigate their academic journeys.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Butler: It is remarkable to watch students use what they are learning to become young professionals.

Powell: The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that my support can make a real difference in a student’s experience and future success.

How can students make the most of their time in higher education?

Butler: Utilizing available resources is a great way to make the most of their time in higher education. Networking and building relationships will also go a long way.

Powell: Be sure to take the initiative, ask questions, seek opportunities and do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

What is the most common question students ask you?

Butler: Students frequently ask if they are taking the correct courses for their degree.

Powell: ‘How many credits do I have left to graduate?’

Why do you love Florida Atlantic and the Schmidt College of Science?

Butler: Florida Atlantic’s campus is beautiful, and I love the plethora of resources and opportunities available to the students. Specifically, the Schmidt College of Science has a strong relationship with the community, which helps students gain access to real world experiences and possible job opportunities through internships and research.

Powell: Even as someone new to Florida Atlantic, I have felt welcomed and energized by the culture here. The Schmidt College of Science is especially exciting because of its commitment to academic excellence and student growth.

Where did you attend college?

Butler: I earned my master’s degree in school counseling education from Florida Atlantic University in 2017, and my bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida.

Powell: I earned my bachelor’s degree from Florida International University and my master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University.
