From Fruits to Fitness, Exercise Science Labs Share Healthy Tips at Annual MODS Science Festival

Both the SHINE and the Muscle Labs from the Schmidt College of Science’s Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion (ESHP) participated in the third annual Visit Lauderdale Science Festival that took over the Museum of Discovery & Science (MODS) in Downtown Fort Lauderdale on March 7. From hands-on STEM experiences, live science demos and interactive exhibits, more than 13,200 curious minds of all ages enjoyed a full day of learning.

Among the festival’s highlights were the activities presented by undergraduate and graduate students from the SHINE (Science and Health Integration Through Nutrition Education) Lab, managed by Nicole Vitale, Ph.D., ESHP assistant professor, and the Muscle Lab, managed by Michael C. Zourdos, Ph.D., ESHP department chair and professor.

ESHP Ph.D. student and two-time national champion powerlifter Kristen Dunsmore deadlifted for the crowd on the festival’s main stage, while other students tested visitors’ strength and muscle size and talked about the benefits of health and fitness. Together with Vitale, SHINE Lab students hosted fun interactive games like “Test Your Veggie Score” to help younger guests learn about healthy eating habits.

“The science festival was a truly outstanding event, offering engaging activities, informative presentations and an energetic atmosphere that inspired everyone who attended,” said Zourdos. “We thoroughly enjoyed participating and connecting with so many inquisitive minds. We look forward to returning next year and building on the excitement of this memorable experience at the science festival.”
