Biography

Dr. Timothy De Ver Dye is a Medical Ecologist and population health researcher whose career spans continents, disciplines, and communities throughout the world. He currently serves as Professor and Chair in the Department of Population Health at Florida Atlantic University. In his previous role, he served as Professor and Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, with joint appointments in Public Health Sciences, Pediatrics, Dentistry, and Health Humanities and Bioethics. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Springer Nature’s Maternal and Child Health Journal.

Dr. Dye’s work bridges anthropology, epidemiology, informatics, and law to advance community- and action-centered population health. With more than 5,000 citations and 100+ peer-reviewed publications, he is recognized for crossing disciplines and partnering with clinicians, communities, and scientists to address complex public health problems —using a multilevel approach that integrates biological, cultural, environmental, and social determinants. His research addresses maternal-child health, chronic disease, infectious disease, environmental exposure, and disaster response in over 30 countries, particularly in Latin America and the Pacific.

Dr. Dye has trained more than 100 students and postdoctoral scholars, from many communities throughout the USA and around the world, and his former mentees now lead research and public health efforts worldwide. His work continues to shape how population science improves lives—not only by documenting disparities but by fostering local capacity, advancing innovation, and democratizing knowledge.

Dr. Dye has overseen a $30+ million research and education portfolio and guided strategic development of interdisciplinary doctoral training as former Director of the Translational Biomedical Science PhD Program, and as an early champion of on-line learning for health professionals throughout the Americas. A former CDC epidemiologist, Dr. Dye has held leadership roles at the University of Hawai‘i, Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Axios International.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, the Society for Applied Anthropology, the Royal Anthropological Institute, and the Royal Society of Public Health, and is a Chartered Geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. His research has been supported by NIH, CDC, NSF, industry, and international foundations. His recent work on biospecimen ethics, participation in genetic research, and international legal frameworks supporting biospecimen-based science culminated in a 2024 Science commentary, and funding from the World Universities Network to lead a consortium of 10 international institutions. Dr. Dye is a licensed attorney with the Missouri Board of Law Examiners and the District of Columbia Bar.
