Kari Sutter, M.D.

Biography

Dr. Kari Sutter is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. Her work is devoted to medical student education and mentorship, where she plays an active role in both classroom teaching and longitudinal career advising. She is deeply involved in supporting students’ academic, professional, and personal development throughout all four years of medical school.

Prior to joining FAU, Dr. Sutter practiced as a staff rheumatologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, where she cared for patients with complex autoimmune and rheumatologic diseases. Before relocating to Florida, she lived in Colorado and served as a staff rheumatologist at Kaiser Permanente, gaining extensive experience in both academic and integrated healthcare settings while delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Dr. Sutter completed the Honors Program in Medicine at the University of Miami, earning her Bachelor of Science in Biology before obtaining her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami, followed by a Rheumatology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Currently, Dr. Sutter’s professional focus is entirely devoted to medical education. She lectures and facilitates small-group learning sessions for first- through third-year medical students and serves as one of four Career Advisors at the College of Medicine, mentoring students from matriculation through graduation. Her contributions to student education and advising have been recognized with multiple awards for excellence in teaching and mentorship.
