Student Travel Award Frequently Asked Questions
What is Undergraduate Research Travel? How do I know if my presentation qualifies for research?
Research, Inquiry, and Creative Activity defined as it relates to this travel process:
- Presenting original work at a conference directly related to your undergraduate major/research/creative activity.
- Performixhibiting at conference/event directly related to your undergraduate major/research/creative activity.
- Competing at conference/event directly related to your undergraduate major/research/creative activity.
- Facilitating or leading a workshop/clinic at a conference that is directly related to your undergraduate major/research/creative activity.
Who is eligible to apply for Student Travel Awards?
Undergraduate students enrolled a minimum of half-time are eligible to apply for a Student Travel Award. Half-time status is considered six (6) credit hours for undergraduate students and three (3) credit hours for graduate students. Students who are not officially enrolled for the summer term at the time of travel, but who were eligible for travel for previous spring and are enrolled half-time for upcoming fall are eligible to for a Student Travel Award. An exception may be granted for students graduating during the semester of travel, proof of approved graduating status is required.
At time of application, any student traveling must be in good academic and disciplinary standing. If a student withdraws from the University during the semester they travel and received a reimbursement by way of a Student Travel Award, the student will be obligated to refund Student Travel.
What events does a Student Travel Award Cover?
Eligible FAU students may apply for Student Travel Awards in order to present academic research, attend personal interest or academic conferences or events , or compete at personal interest or academic conferences or events.
What expenses will be covered by Student Travel Awards?
- Airfare & Baggage Fees
- Lodging Cost – with itemized receipts showing you as the guest
- Registration Fees
- Rental Car - Must be Avis (Students may use other rental car companies if a justification is provided) - showing you as the renter
- Gas, if driving a rental car
- Parking and tolls
- Taxi, subway, shuttle, Uber, Lyft
What expenses will not be covered by Student Travel Awards?
- Expenses in advance of travel
- Expenses not awarded on a Student Travel Award Letter
- Travel not approved by the University
- Food or other per diem costs
- Membership Fees
- Expenses reimbursed to someone else or paid by a department

How much can I be reimbursed?
How are Student Travel Award amounts determined?
The amount of each Student Travel Award issued is determined by student lead, student travel committees. The anonymous members use the Student Travel Procedures and information provided in each student travel application to aid in their decisions. The committees’ decisions are final.
Can a denied application be appealed?
Denied Student Travel and Student Travel Reimbursement applications can be appealed based on certain criteria.
Can a professional staff apply for Student Travel Awards on me or my groups behalf?
No, students traveling alone must submit their own applications and students traveling in a group can have one student that is traveling with the group apply on behalf of the group.
