A pediatric surgeon and researcher, Arthur J. Ross III, MD, MBA, has served four medical schools as a campus executive or dean.

He is a graduate of Trinity College, Connecticut, and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Ohio, with postgraduate medical and research training at Duke University Medical Center; University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He earned a master's in administrative medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Ross served as a faculty physician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; as the founding regional dean for the Western Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine; and as dean of Chicago Medical School and vice president for medical affairs of Rosalind Franklin University, Illinois.

He led the West Virginia University School (WVU) of Medicine for five years from 2010-2015. During his tenure at WVU, the school expanded its faculty substantially; won a major, multi-year National Institutes of Health award to develop clinical and translational research; and fully restructured its faculty practice and teaching hospital management. In 2015 the school received a full eight year reaccreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Throughout 2016, he served as interim dean and professor at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. In that role, he helped the university determine how to best position the College of Medicine for its next phase of growth as well as led the successful search for the college’s next permanent dean.

Currently, Ross is actively engaged as a consultant for medical schools, academic health centers and large, highly integrated health systems. His consulting work focuses upon: 1) Academic health centers/hospitals/hospital system affiliations, mergers and acquisitions 2) Medical school accreditation/reaccreditation and 3) Coaching (deans and senior vice presidents of academic health centers).

He is also the author or co-author of almost 100 original articles and book chapters.

Ross has been selected as a leader of several national professional and accrediting organizations. He is a past chair of the Governing Council for the American Medical Association Section on Medical Schools, as well as a past chair of the LCME. In 2015 he completed a term as an elected member of the Association of American Medical College's Administrative Board of the Council of Deans.
