Doctor’s Office

Doctor’s Office

Photography by Adriana Garriga-López, Ph.D., Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters

The researcher took this photograph in the office of a medical doctor in a small town in the central mountains of Puerto Rico. The doctor is one of the few physicians who still has an independent office in the area. Puerto Rico is experiencing a severe shortage of doctors, driven by unfair and unequal funding for public health and low insurance reimbursement rates for providers. This has led to increasingly poor health outcomes in the population. The doctor is a descendant of sugar cane cutters.
