Grant Lab

From Genome Dynamics to Breakthroughs in Cancer and Addiction Research

Grant Lab members, including Dr. Patrick Grant and Marilyn Grant

About the Lab

The Grant lab research currently involves the epigenomics of cellular proliferation, genomic modifications that mediate resistance to genotoxic cancer chemotherapeutics, and the study of molecular mechanisms underlying interventions for cocaine and opioid addiction.

The Grant lab utilizes models that include yeast (top left), human brain cells (top right), tumor samples (bottom right), in relation to how histone modifications regulate nucleosome structure and function (bottom left).

Dr. Grant’s research focuses on the role of histone modifications in chromatin remodeling, gene expression and genomic stability. After receiving his Ph.D. in Medicine from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where he studied the regulation of immunoglobulin genes with Dr. Sven Pettersson, Dr. Grant joined Dr. Jerry Workman’s HHMI lab at Penn State University as an American Cancer Society fellow studying the role of nucleosomes in transcription regulation. During this time, he was the first to identify and characterize multiple coactivator/histone acetyltransferase complexes, including the archetypal SAGA complex.

Teaching & Mentoring

Dr. Grant has mentored 60 students in his lab including MD, MD/PhD, PhD, MS, undergraduate and high school students. In addition, he has mentored 9 professional researchers including visiting scientists, post-doctoral fellows, research assistant professors, research faculty and staff.
