- Responsible Authority:
- Dean and Chief of Health Affairs
Principle
The Schmidt College of Medicine Faculty Search and Hiring policy establishes a framework to support the hiring of excellent educators, clinicians, and researchers to support the College's missions in patient care, research, and education by establishing a process that streamlines the hiring of College of Medicine faculty. This policy will ensure that the College maintains hiring integrity, while at the same time providing a streamlined approach for the College to hire certain non-tenured track faculty without a search committee. This streamlined approach will simplify the recruiting process and reduce the inherent administrative burden on existing faculty by eliminating search committees and replacing them with an alternative vetted candidate selection process, for non-tenured faculty positions as specified below.
Policy Statement
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance in searches for non-tenure-track faculty in the College of Medicine. The Dean is the hiring authority for all faculty positions in the College of Medicine.
- Search committees, appointed with the approval of the Dean of the College of Medicine, are required for external searches for non-tenure track leadership positions at the level of department chair, associate dean or higher. The Dean must approve of all such candidates to be interviewed on campus. Search Committees are not required for non-tenure track positions below such levels.
- All tenure-track positions require a search committee appointed with the approval of the Dean of the College of Medicine.
- Any candidate who currently holds tenure at an outside institution must follow University and College policies for awarding tenure on appointment.
- Internal appointments for any position do not require a search committee.
- Searches that do not require a search committee must be authorized by the department chair or senior leadership dean (vice dean or associate deans), with the approval of the Dean of the College of Medicine. The decision to approve on-campus interviews will be made at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Medicine at the time he/she approves the search. Candidates will be interviewed on campus by a selection committee selected with the approval of the Dean of the College of Medicine.
