IPE Newsletter Fall 2023

Summer 2022

The 2021-2022 Academic Year was a year of growth and innovation for the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice. Our team dedicated countless hours to developing interactive and engaging virtual  experiences in order to allow students to continue benefiting from interprofessional programming amid COVID-19 restrictions. In this inaugural edition of our newsletter, please find a few highlighted programs and accomplishments.

Geriatric Screening & Assessment

FAU’s OIPE&P in collaboration with its Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and School of Social Work, and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s School of Pharmacy have worked with local community partners to enable teams of students to interact with older adult mentors to learn about healthy aging, one of our pillars, through the lens of interprofessional collaboration. Over 300 students participate in this program every year.

Script Your Future (SYF) Team Challenge

14 Earlier this year, FAU participated in the SYF Medication Adherence Team Challenge in partnership with Palm Beach Atlantic School of Pharmacy for the second year. This is a national competition among teams of health profession students focused towards promoting medication adherence, particularly for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular, and respiratory illnesses, while addressing health disparities.
In addition, for this year, there was a focus on vaccine confidence, as the COVID-19 vaccine reached the public. Last year as first-time competitors, we were recognized as a Rookie of the Year award finalist. For more on this, please click here .

CLARION Competition 2022

The University of Minnesota's CLARION competition is a student-driven program that focuses on the professional development of health science students including leadership, teamwork, communication, analytical thinking, dispute resolution, and business practices.

The Office of Interprofessional Education & Practice is glad to announce that we were able to, for the first time, send a team of 4 students to virtually participate in the Clarion Competition challenge. To learn more about the competition and our student team, please click here

Do No (P)Harm

Historically, this in-person interprofessional communication activity focusing on polypharmacy and medical reconciliation included medical and pharmacy students averaging 120 participants. Due to COVID restrictions and the need to move it to a virtual environment we were able to include students from the college of nursing and the school of social work. This year, over 200 students participated in this activity which provided them with the opportunity to work collaboratively in interprofessional teams to review a patient case and reconcile discharge medications.

Acknowledgement

We would like to thank the following faculty, staff and students from our partner schools for their dedication, time, and efforts in helping us to achieve our goals this year. You have been an essential part of our team and a delight to work with.
