IPE Competencies

An Interprofessional Educational Collaborative (IPEC) in 2011 identified four competencies domains to be taught within the professions. The domains included: values/ethics for interprofessional practice, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams/teamwork. The expert panel that developed these competencies included the following: American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American Dental Education Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, and Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.

The updated competencies (2016) are focused on the Triple Aim and improving Population Health through interprofessional collaborative practice. The four general competencies are aligned under the central domain of interprofessional collaboration. This update expanded to include 9 additional supporting institutional members including the Council on Social Work Education.
