Some Were Neighbors (Exhibition)

On View: October 5 – October 28, 2023
Opening Reception: October 5, 2023, 6:30 pm
Schmidt Center Public Space, Performing Arts Building

Some Were Neighbors is a traveling poster exhibition curated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The exhibition examines the role of ordinary people during the Holocaust. The central role of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders is indisputable, but they depended on countless others. Why were there some zealous participants in the persecution of Jews, while most simply went along or joined in? Why did so few help the victims? This poster series examines the motives and pressures that influenced the choices and behaviors of individuals during the Holocaust. fau.edu/galleries

“Some Were Neighbors: Choice, Human Behavior, and the Holocaust” and “What did Florida know about the Holocaust?” (Symposium)

Saturday, October 14, 2023, 8:30 am – 2:30 pm
Performing Arts Building, (PA 101) / Schmidt Center Public Space

How was the Holocaust possible? The role of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders in the murder of six million Jews is indisputable. But they could not carry this out alone. The Nazis had help from millions of ordinary people across Europe. Some Europeans acted out of hatred for Jews, but many others weighed various pressures and incentives in responding to the plight of the victims. Amid war and upheaval, a range of motivations—fear, greed, opportunity—led people to make choices that often-had a deadly impact. How did individuals respond to the persecution and murder of their Jewish classmates, coworkers, neighbors, and friends? How did relationships and roles shape their decisions? What drove a rare few to risk helping the victims? Symposium presented in collaboration with United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Community for Holocaust Education Centers (CHEC).
