New Programming & Projects
Integrating new programs and projects into our IPE&P offerings continues to be a focus for our team. During this past year, we have worked to implement and plan programming that includes students who were not previously exposed to interprofessional education which is an accreditation requirement. The College of Medicine programming expanded to now include M4 students who are transitioning to residency. The College of Nursing’s working professionals BSN students on the Davie campus are now participating in two IPE programming opportunities and the RN to BSN students are also receiving IPE training. The School of Social Work also expanded IPE programming to include their advanced standing students.
Additionally, we were able to pilot a collaborative program in which students experienced both Academic Service-Learning and Interprofessional Education & Practice. This growth in programming aims at increasing participation from both students and faculty. Thus, many new faculty received an introduction to IPE&P through the process of collaborating in curriculum development and participating as facilitators for those sessions.
During AY20-21 our work resulted in the development of various new programs that were delivered virtually, including:
- Implementation of the IPE&P Simulation experience for all M3 (Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship) medical students and all Boca campus Direct Entry and Accelerated nursing students. This activity was developed last year and had to go through intensive changes to be moved to a virtual platform due to Covid-19. During 16 sessions, a total of 15 faculty members and 3 nursing education graduate students worked with over 200 students. The OIPE&P Director, COM Associate Director, and Coordinator participated in all 16 sessions.
- A Geriatric Screening & Assessment Review, originally developed and implemented as a simulation by the COM for its year 1 student, has now become an additional interprofessional activity by including Social Work advanced standing students. Faculty have requested that this activity will be available to all Foundational Level students next year.
- The Deans from the Colleges of Nursing and Social Work and Criminal Justice together with the OIPE&P collaborated with Quindio University in Colombia to develop international IPE&P/ASL programming. The first activity took place on Friday, November 13, 2020, when over 250 students, faculty, and staff from both institutions participated in the 1st Encounter for the Institutional Alliance. Participants discussed ways to move forward with this collaboration when travel restrictions end and the impact of global Service Learning and IPE&P.
- The first-ever collaborative ASL/IPE pilot project in which students from the College of Medicine and the School of Social Work developed and implemented projects with, and for, two local community partners.
- A timely Anti-Racism and Microaggressions workshop was created in collaboration with the University of Miami’s College of Medicine. Students from that college and the FAU Davie campus College of Nursing participated in this 2-hour activity where they had the opportunity to openly discuss their experiences as students in the practice settings.
- Students enrolled in the IPE&P Foundational Level program teamed up to participate in the 2021 Script Your Future Team Challenge for the first time. This is a national campaign to raise awareness about the importance of medication adherence and vaccine hesitancy as a vital first step toward addressing health disparities in minority and medically underserved communities.
- Curriculum was revised to include RN to BSN nursing students with medical and pharmacy students in the long-standing “Do No PHarm” interprofessional communication exercise focusing on polypharmacy and medication reconciliation.
- A Change in Patient Status IPE activity was developed by faculty from the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing for M4 medical & Davie Campus BSN track for working professional nursing students to communicate changes in patient status.
