About the Program

What is the B.E.C.E. program?
The Bachelor of Early Care and Education (B.E.C.E.) is a fully online degree at Florida Atlantic University that prepares students to work with children from birth through age eight, including those with disabilities or developmental delays.
What makes this program unique?
The B.E.C.E. integrates early childhood education and early childhood special education, preparing graduates to support children of all abilities in inclusive settings.
Is the program fully online?
Yes. The program is delivered entirely online, offering flexibility for working professionals and busy students.

Admissions

How do I apply?
Applying is a two-step process:
  • Apply and be admitted to Florida Atlantic University
  • Apply to the B.E.C.E. program once eligibility requirements are met
What are the admission requirements?
Applicants must have:
  • 60 completed credit hours or an A.A. degree
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

Program Structure

Is the degree available online, hybrid, or in person only?
A: Students admitted fall 2026 and after will complete a FULLY Online degree. All coursework will be offered fully online, with most courses asynchronous. However, some coursework will be offered online, but synchronously.
How long does it take to complete the degree?
Students with an A.A. degree can complete the program in as little as two years. Both full-time and part-time options are available.
Can I study part-time?
Yes. The program offers both full-time and part-time tracks with structured course rotations.
What are the degree requirements?
The program includes core coursework in early childhood education, education, and elective options that allow students to tailor their studies to their career goals.
Are electives flexible?
Yes. Students can select electives aligned with their career goals. Alternative electives may be approved if they are fully online and reviewed with an advisor.

Learning & Opportunities

Does FAU/BECE have an internship/partnership with any schools?
A: At this time, we do not have formal internships with schools. We can arrange for students who are not currently working in the field to observe and/or complete classroom projects. The degree does not have a formal internship or teaching experience.
Do the BECE students complete internships or student teaching?
The degree does not have a formal internship or teaching experience. Embedded in the coursework are field work assignments allowing students to observe and/or complete classroom projects.
What standards guide the program?
The curriculum aligns with national professional standards, including those from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Are there research opportunities?
Yes. Students can earn the FAU Undergraduate Research Certificate through embedded coursework and selected activities.
Can I earn additional credentials?
Yes. Students may earn a Certificate in Nature-based Early Learning by selecting specific electives. Students can also earn the Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Certificate through embedded coursework and selected activities.

Career & Advancement

What careers does this degree prepare me for?
Graduates are prepared for careers working with young children and families in various educational and child-serving settings. These include, but are not limited to, child care, preschool teacher (with additional training), elementary/K-3 grade teacher, children’s services, and early intervention personnel.
Are there accelerated degree options?
Yes. Students who already have an Associate of Science (with general education requirements met), an Associate of Arts degree, or are seeking a 2nd Bachelor's degree, can complete this degree in as little as 2 years.
Additionally, the B.E.C.E. offers 4+1 pathways, allowing students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in about five years.
What graduate programs are available through the 4+1 option?
  • M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction (Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education)
  • M.Ed. in Special Education (Interventions Specialist)
When should I apply for a 4+1 program?
You may apply upon entry to the B.E.C.E. program or during your first semester, prior to the spring application deadline.

Cost & Support

Does FAU accept the T.E.A.C.H. or SEEK scholarships?

In addition to T.E.A.C.H and SEEK., many students receive support through:

  • Employer-sponsored scholarships
  • Early Learning Coalition scholarships (availability varies by region)
  • Children's Services Council workforce scholarships (where available)
  • Local foundation and community scholarships

Once admitted, students are also eligible to apply for FAU College of Education Scholarships Students admitted to the College of Education may apply for numerous FAU scholarships, including:

  • Early childhood-focused scholarships where eligibility applies.
We want to know if the BECE is just in English or the teacher can do it in Spanish?
The degree program is just in English.
