Florida Atlantic NEUROSCIENCE—Where Discovery Comes to Mind

The Florida Atlantic Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute supports research, education and community outreach, with efforts spanning all of the Florida Atlantic campuses. The Brain Institute administrative home is on the Florida Atlantic MacArthur campus in Jupiter, Fla., which also houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation and Technology.

With more than 100 neuroscience faculty-level investigators located at Florida Atlantic and affiliate research centers, the Brain Institute supports state-of-the-art research and innovative educational activities and is the sponsor for the Florida Atlantic Neuroscience Student Organization.

Collectively, we seek to unlock the secrets of brain development, function and plasticity and how the mechanisms uncovered can be compromised to drive brain disorders, such as autism,, schizophrenia, depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Juan was raised in South Florida and trained under Dr. Rod Murphey for 6 years. His work looks at synaptogenesis and the genetic control of synaptic proteins called gap junctions.

Mentor: Claudia Rodrigues, Ph.D.

Aline Santana, Ph.D., is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Vascular Biology Lab of Claudia Rodrigues, Ph.D., at the Department of Biomedical Science, Florida Atlantic Schmidt College of Medicine.

Merike Lang, Ph.D.
Mentor: Mónica Rosselli, Ph.D.

Merike Lang, Ph.D., is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Neuropsychology lab of Mónica Rosselli, Ph.D., at Florida Atlantic University. Merike is investigating neuroprotective effects of bilingualism on normal and abnormal aging.

Mobile Minds Expands Into Broward County

This expansion was made possible due to a generous grant from the Sharron and Joseph Ashby Hubert Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward.

ASCEND took Brain Sparks to the Garden's Mall for a day of brainy fun. Family's were invited to craft neurons, participate in games using EEGs, and craft an egg helmet.

The SNBI community outreach team hosted the AAUW's Tech Trek summer camp neuroscience course. A class of 12 students completed activities including brain dissections, craft-a-neuron, and real molecular biology experiments.
