Its primary purpose is to make digital content accessible to people with visual disabilities who use screen readers, which can read the alt text aloud to convey the image’s content and meaning. Alt text also provides benefits for users with slow internet connections or search engines, which use the text to understand the image’s context.

Captions

Captions are a text version of a video or audio’s spoken words and relevant non-speech sounds, displayed on a screen to help people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing understand the content in their original language, those with neurodiversity, or those whose first language is not English. Common types include closed captions (CC), which can be turned on or off by the viewer, and open captions, which are permanently embedded in the video. In addition to dialogue, captions can include speaker identification, important sound effects, and descriptions of music.
