LA group work

How do I know if I am in a class with LAs?

On the first day of class, you will meet your faculty members and the Learning Assistants for your class. Additional information may be found on the course syllabus, Canvas course or by stopping by the LA office within the Math Learning Center.

What is the difference between this and other programs to help with class material?

FAU offers many different types of academic assistance. Learning Assistants differ most from all other services based on their involvement in group work activities during established classtime.

To learn more about additional academic resources, please visit their respective pages: Supplemental Instruction, Math Learning Center, CLASS Tutoring, University Center for Excellence in Writing (UCEW), Science Learning Center, eSuccess .

What is the benefit of having LAs in my class?

During class time, lectures are enhanced by active learning, facilitated by well trained Learning Assistants.

LAs are peers who have taken the course previously. This gives them a perspective much like those taking the course currently. This shared experience helps guide the LA to focus on what they know to be challenging.

Having an LA in the classroom activates learning by facilitating group work while supporting the groups in their work during lecture.

LAs meet with faculty weekly and are able to share student concerns and feedback.

What is expected of me if I have a class with LAs?

The only expectation is that students participate, to their level of comfort, in the lecture and the accompanying active learning assignments.

How do I become an LA?

Applicants have previous knowledge of the course in which they’d like to be considered. Many applicants receive faculty support via letters of recommendation or emails to the hiring coordinator, Angel Nevin, at anevin@fau.edu.

If you are interested in being considered for an LA position, please review information on our application page: Apply
