Abstract: This discussion is designed to provoke questions, promote critical thinking, and enrich our perspectives on youth and adults with disabilities. Featuring brief thought-provoking movie clips portraying varied aspects of how disability impacts the human experience (i.e. employment, social behaviors, relationships, and health), this guided discussion will examine how disability is portrayed within the human experience.

Increased Screen Time: What are the implications?
Abstract: Does it seem like wherever you go people of all ages are “glued” to their screened devices? Ever wonder if there are long-term implications for such intense exposure to electronic devices with a screen, such as a tablet, computer, or phone? This session will present current research describing and short and long term implications for health and development associated with increased screen time use.

Abstract: Have you ever asked yourself, “What is a school psychologist and what do they do?” In this presentation, you will learn about the role school psychologists play in schools, their clients and how they assist teachers, parents, and students. You will also learn what psychoeducational testing can teach us about children. Further, you will have to opportunity to query a practicing school psychologist and learn about how to become how to become a school psychologist.

Abstract: This multi-presenter session will provide overview of three research studies conducted by DESE Doctoral candidates. The foci of these studies are (a) teaching safety skills to adults with developmental disabilities, (b) using Zumba to impact the health and fitness of adults with intellectual disabilities, and (c) using literacy based behavioral interventions with young children. Abstract: When embedded within a continuum of services, early identification of learning or behavioral difficulties can result in improved academic and social/emotional outcomes among preschool and school-age students. In this session, a number of evidence-based practices that can be used for early identification of learning or behavioral difficulties in preschool and school age students will be described. Additionally, broader ethical and practical issues related to the integration of these practices into a continuum of services will be presented. Finally, implications for selecting appropriate assessment instruments and screening tools, identifying red flags and effective evidence-based interventions will be discussed.

Abstract: Anxiety is one of the most prevalent and impairing co-occurring conditions in children, teens, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although prevalence rates vary, most studies indicate that approximately one-half of individuals with ASD meet the criteria for at least one anxiety disorder. Fear, worry, and anxiety can result in personal distress in children, parents, and siblings, increase challenging behavior, restrict activities/opportunities, and negatively impact the quality of life for child and family. Alex Plank is the 30 year old autistic guy behind WrongPlanet.net, the incredibly popular site for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. Both Alex and Wrong Planet have been featured by CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and Good Morning America. Wrong Planet has more than 100,000 registered members and its discussion forums contain millions of messages.

Transitioning students with developmental disabilities from school to adulthood: What you should know and what you can do ease the transition.
Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to discuss transition, specifically how we should think about transition as well as activities that can be used to facilitate transition across the lifespan for individuals with developmental disabilities. The session will also include a discussion about microenterprises (a small entrepreneurial business) to illustrate how teaching and implementing transition activities can come together in a fascinating way to support students.
