Advocacy for Education: A Community Effort
Mini Conference
Abstract: Advocating for and on the behalf of students takes a (proverbial) village, or in this case a community. This community incorporates and requires collaboration among parents/caregivers, teachers, and legislators. This two hour session will have a feature an overview of advocacy from the legislative perspective and a panel discussion reflecting perspectives on advocacy by community constituents. Abstract: Social-emotional learning (SEL) is promoted and sometimes mandated as required content to be taught in schools. There are many curricula (prepared content) available to teach SEL. However, often the content is not tailored for students with disabilities. This poses a challenge for special education teachers and others who are responsible for teaching students with disabilities, especially those with autism and have social-emotional deficits. These students too can benefit from learning social-emotional skills. This presentation will describe a five step process used to adapt a social-emotional curriculum to meet the needs of elementary age students with autism. Participants will solve the dilemma of what do you do when curricula content must be modified to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Abstract: What is the cure for the common cold? How might a run of the mill headache be handled? Seemingly, there are reliable and safe remedies for these conditions, but can disability be cured? Is this even a legitimate question? Come and learn about some of the most outrageous so-called treatments that have and in some cases are still used in the world of special education. This colloquium will feature a discussion of treatments used to ‘cure’ children and adults with disabilities. You will laugh, cry and may even get a bit frustrated after hearing about these treatments.

Event

Abstract: When embedded within a continuum of services, early identification of learning or behavioral difficulties can result in improved academic and social/emotional outcomes among preschool and school-age students. In this session, a number of evidence-based practices that can be used for early identification of learning or behavioral difficulties in preschool and school age students will be described. Additionally, broader ethical and practical issues related to the integration of these practices into a continuum of services will be presented. Finally, implications for selecting appropriate assessment instruments and screening tools, identifying red flags and effective evidence-based interventions will be discussed.

Although prevalence rates vary, most studies indicate that approximately one-half of individuals with ASD meet the criteria for at least one anxiety disorder. Fear, worry, and anxiety can result in personal distress in children, parents, and siblings, increase challenging behavior, restrict activities/opportunities, and negatively impact the quality of life for child and family. Abstract: This Community Autism Speaker Series event features Alex Plank. Alex Plank is the 30 year old autistic guy behind WrongPlanet.net, the incredibly popular site for individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. Both Alex and Wrong Planet have been featured by CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and Good Morning America. Wrong Planet has more than 100,000 registered members and its discussion forums contain millions of messages.

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to describe and discuss recommendations that educators can use in the classroom to: (a) assess student abilities, (b) teach employment skills, (c) promote generalization of employment skills across settings, and (d) monitor student progress. Finally, this session will include a discussion on creating, teaching, and generalizing skills related to a job task.

Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) Event

Abstract: This Community Autism Speaker Series event features John Miller. John Miller was born in 1968 in Montreal, Quebec. As a child he dealt with many social and academic difficulties. In 2010 John published a manuscript based on his own life and teaching experiences titled, "The A Word: My Life With Asperger's and the World of Autism."

Preventing Child Bullying in Schools and in the Community

Dr. Susan Limber, a national leader in efforts to prevent bullying, will address the impact of bullying on both the targeted children and the bullies themselves, with a special emphasis on vulnerable populations such as children with autism and other disabilities. She will also describe the Olweus Program, the most widely used and effective evidence based anti-bullying program in the world. This program targets multiple systems calling for school and community wide efforts to combat bullying.

Transitioning students with developmental disabilities from school to adulthood: What you should know and what you can do ease the transition.

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to discuss transition, specifically how we should think about transition as well as activities that can be used to facilitate transition across the lifespan for individuals with developmental disabilities. The session will also include a discussion about microenterprises (a small entrepreneurial business) to illustrate how teaching and implementing transition activities can come together in a fascinating way to support students.

This study is investigating the impact of interview training on the hire ability of interviewees.

The first part is a training session that will take approximately 30 minutes.

The second part, which will take place on a different date, is an interview that will take approximately 10 minutes.
