Wednesday, Jul 23, 2025

Dr. Bryan Nichols was recently awarded a research grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for his project “Wise Owls: Building Character Education for Florida Atlantic’s Future Environmental Leaders, Educators, Advocates, Scientists, and Stewards”. FAU was one of only 40 institutions nationwide to earn this grant that teaches character-based environmental education by empowering students to become not only experts in their fields, but also ethical stewards of the planet. Dr. Nichols is co-leading this project with Dr. Michelle Petersen from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. The initiative aims to integrate character education into environmental studies, preparing students not only as experts in their fields but also as ethical stewards of our planet. Dr. Nichols was featured on FAU’s Research Daily Bulletin, take a look here: https://www.fau.edu/research/research-daily/2025/building-environmental-character/ Congratulations to Dr. Nichols for his dedication to this transformative work and for representing our department and college with such distinction on the national stage!
