The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is pleased to announce that Melissa Emerson, BSN '04, MBA '18, has been named a 2026 Distinguished Alumni by the Florida Atlantic University Alumni Association. Together with other honorees, Emerson was recognized on April 10, during the 2026 Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony and Reception.

“This moment is beyond anything I could have envisioned for myself, and I am deeply grateful,” expressed Emerson.

Emerson began her nursing journey in 2000, as a BSN student at Florida Atlantic. Today, she is the chief operating officer of Bethesda Hospital, which is part of the larger Baptist Health system—a reflection of her dedication, faith and passion for serving others.

“While I was in nursing school at FAU, I was working as a nurse extern at Bethesda Hospital—part of Baptist Health—focused on learning and growing in the profession," recalled Emerson. "I could never have imagined the path my career would take or that I would one day receive this recognition. It is truly an honor and incredibly humbling to receive this award.”

In her role as chief operating officer, Emerson shared that the most rewarding part about her work is supporting the hospital’s teams so they can deliver exceptional care to its patients and community. She feels it is a privilege to serve others in moments that matter most, and she sees her role as an opportunity to lead with intention, compassion and stewardship.

“Health care is about people, and I find great purpose in creating an environment where caregivers feel supported, valued and able to thrive,” stated Emerson. “It is also incredibly rewarding to grow our services in ways that expand access and bring care closer to where our community lives.”

Emerson has remained actively engaged with the College of Nursing. For the past two years, she has served on the college’s Advisory Board.

“This role allows me to stay connected to the college, while supporting its continued growth and impact,” shared Emerson. “Giving back is important to me because FAU helped shape both my career and my calling. Investing in the next generation of nurses and leaders is not only meaningful, but a responsibility I carry with gratitude.”

Looking back on her education and experiences at Florida Atlantic, Emerson noted that College of Nursing Professor Emerita Kathryn Keller, Ph.D., was instrumental in her journey at FAU.

“Her down-to-earth approach to teaching and her commitment to true caring excellence left a lasting impression on me,” said Emerson. “Overall, Florida Atlantic provided a strong clinical foundation while also emphasizing the philosophy of caring, which has stayed with me throughout my career. It taught me that clinical excellence and compassion are inseparable.”

Emerson shared some advice for current College of Nursing students: “Stay grounded in your purpose and trust the journey ahead, even when you cannot see the full picture,” she said. “Nursing will challenge you, but it will also shape you in powerful and meaningful ways.”
