The Anne Boykin Institute for the Advancement of Caring in Nursing’s 2025 Summer Academy

The Anne Boykin Institute for the Advancement of Caring in Nursing’s 2025 Summer Academy held June 4–6 at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing generated thoughtful conversations about a holistic approach to nursing practice. The event, held in person and virtually, made it possible for participants from around the world to join the dialogue.

Dr. Savina Schoenhofer emphasized the broad range of countries represented, with attendees joining from the U.S., Canada, Slovenia, Philippines and South Korea. "It illustrates the growing global interest in caring science and highlights the meaningful impact of the Anne Boykin Institute,” she added.

This year’s theme, Caring: Essential Knowledge for Nursing Practice, focused on how caring science guides and strengthens nursing in all areas of practice.

Participants heard from leading scholars in caring science and reflected on the meaning of caring in their work. Artist-in-Residence Mary Packard shared original poetry that created space for deeper connection and understanding of the manifestations of caring in nursing practice.

“The Summer Academy provided a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with caring theorists and leaders in caring science,” said Dr. Joy Longo, associate dean, academic programs.

Sessions explored the role of caring processes in guiding clinical practice, particularly within the context of the nurse-patient relationship. Attendees examined how caring science not only grounds nursing as a distinct discipline but also informs and innovates national professional standards, including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials.

“As the Summer Academy came to a close, colleagues from across the world shared excitement about the dialogue and projects emerging from the inspiration and commitment to advancing caring as the essential knowledge for nursing,” said Dr. Anne Boykin, professor emeritus and Anne Boykin Institute board member.
