Advanced Holistic Nursing MSN - Fully Online

This 33 credit concentration advances knowledge of contemporary views of healing and holistic nursing practice grounded in caring. The Advanced Holistic Nursing (AHN) concentration courses offer content and practice in the integration of mind-body practices, manipulative body practices, and energy-based healing modalities to promote health and well-being. The Advanced Holistic Nursing Concentration does not prepare students to enter a Nurse Practitioner role. Completely online, full and part time study is available. The practicum needs of students in various geographic areas can be accommodated. Preceptor and practicum site decisions are determined in collaboration with Faculty. The practicum hours may be at the students' place of employment, if appropriate, with an approved preceptor. Students will earn a MSN degree and are eligible to sit for Board Certification in Advanced Holistic Nursing (AHN-BC). Applicants with an earned Master’s degree in Nursing can earn a Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) in Advanced Holistic Nursing. A gap analysis is conducted to identify required courses and practicum hours.
FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is ranked by US News and World Reports as one of the top 50 Masters Programs in the US. The selection is based on a number of criteria used to rate program quality including research funding, faculty credentials, number of degrees awarded, student: faculty ratio, and mean undergraduate GPA of admitted students.
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited university or college nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- A cumulative 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits of the baccalaureate program is required.
- Undergraduate level statistics course and Undergraduate level nursing research course.
- Curriculum vitae (Required Format for CV).
- One letter of recommendation from academic or professional reference.
- Philosophy of Nursing Essay (Guidelines for Philosophy Essay)
- Current RN licensure (submit copy of license or online license verification from the department of health acceptable https://appsmqa.doh.state.fl.us/MQASearchServices/HealthCareProviders Students must be licensed in the state in which they will complete practicum courses.
- An interview may be required.
*Annual state/federal criminal background checks are required for all admitted students. A drug screen may be required. All costs for these requirements are the responsibility of the student.

How will an MSN in Advanced Holistic Nursing at FAU help me get a job in holistic nursing?
Holistic nurses work in all healthcare settings including hospitals, universities, public health, and private practices. The demand for holistic nursing preparation continues to grow as people are increasingly seeking holistic approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit.
Holistic nurses use holistic values, principles, and modalities in their daily life and in their clinical practice. Holistic nurse healers foster an individual’s healing process and nourish the wholeness of others through caring through the use of authentic, caring presence; traditional nursing skills; and healing arts.
Graduates of the AHN-MSN at FAU are also prepared as Integrative Nurse Coaches for any practice setting or specialty area. Nurse coaches “assess, strategize, plan and evaluate progress towards negotiated coaching goals” (Hess, et. al 2013, p. xiii) in which the person is understood as the expert in his/her own care (p. xiii). Exciting employment opportunities for Nurse Coaches are developing across the entire spectrum of health, wellness, and healing. Integrative Nurse Coaches may function independently and offer an advanced level of clinical expertise to his/her nursing practice.
Does the AHN-MSN at FAU prepare me to become a Nurse Practitioner?
The AHN-MSN at FAU does not prepare you to become a Nurse Practitioner. Nurse practitioners may seek a post graduate certificate in AHN to support the integration of holistic nursing and Integrative nurse coaching into their practice.
As a Nurse Coach with an MSN degree in AHN, will I have prescriptive authority?
Nurse Coach competencies do not include prescriptive authority.
What is the difference between a Holistic Nurse and a Nurse Coach?
Holistic Nurses are not all Nurse Coaches while all Nurse Coaches are Holistic Nurses! Both Holistic Nurses and Integrative Nurse Coaches bring heart-centered care into a therapeutic relationship along with a broad range of skills to optimize patient/client outcomes.

What is the difference between an Integrative Health & Wellness or Life Coach and a Nurse Coach?
With the emphasis on the need for healthy lifestyles, the call for health and wellness coaches is ever increasing! The difference between Nurses Coaches and other health and wellness coaches lies in the standardization of education, training, supervision, and practice.
The Health & Wellness or Life Coach Industry is unregulated. That means anyone can call themselves a life or wellness coach, without any real training.
Integrative Nurse Coaches must be (1) licensed, professional nurses, (2) follow a legally defined scope of nursing practice and (3) exhibit nursing competencies.
The American Nurses Association has defined the scope & competencies of Nurse Coaching practice and education. In addition, the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) has established an accredited national board certification exam for Health & Wellness Nurse Coach at multiple levels.
Am I required to obtain National Certification to incorporate Advanced Holistic Nursing or Nurse Coach competencies into my nursing practice?
Graduates of the AHN MSN at FAU are qualified to take the National Certification in Advanced Holistic Nursing (AHN-BC) and Advanced Nurse Coach (ANC-BC) exams offered through the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC). Currently National certification is not required to practice as a Holistic Nurse or Integrative Nurse Coach. However, we encourage all graduates to seek national certification and an indicator of their knowledge and expertise!
