EAP 0441/2: Level 4 (B1 intermediate)

Goal #1: Develop ability to read, understand and analyze multi-paragraphed text on general and introductory academic themes.

• Demonstrate understanding of intermediate key vocabulary on the topics: Animals, the Environment, Transportation, Customs, Health and Fitness, Discovery and Invention, Fashion, and Economics.
• Demonstrate reading strategies such as previewing, skimming, and scanning in intermediate level texts.
• Demonstrate ability to distinguish between main ideas and supporting details in intermediate level texts.
• Use a variety of context clues to aid comprehension of unfamiliar words and phrases.

Writing

• Produce four multi-paragraph essays that include introductory paragraph with thesis statement, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph:
  • Problem-Solution essay.

  • Compare and Contrast essay.
  • Argument essay.
• Compose writing with simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence structure and use varied sentence structures and punctuation to add variety, flow, and interest to writing.
• Demonstrate command of connectives and transitional phrases for addition, sequencing, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, concession, argument, and conclusion.
• Identify and self-correct sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-ons in written communication.
• Paraphrase ideas from a reading; summarize a level appropriate text.
• Employ revising and editing strategies to improve organization, word choice, grammatical correctness in written communication and use self-editing skills, peer-review, and instructor feedback for review and revision of essays.
• Demonstrate command of mechanics at the intermediate level including capitalization, periods, commas, semi colons, and other punctuation marks.
• Compose multi-paragraph essays under timed, exam conditions.
