Building an Underwater Connection
Currently a research assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, Georgios Sklivanitis, Ph.D., has been inventing for as long as he can remember. His innovative accomplishments include winning the 2014 Nutaq Software-Defined Radio Academic U.S. National Contest and founding Extreme Comms Lab, a company working to leverage a novel method of underwater communication. Dr. Sklivanitis' research interests span the areas of signal processing, software-defined wireless communications and networking, cognitive radio, and underwater acoustic communications.

How did you first become interested in wireless communications?
During my undergraduate studies in Greece I had the opportunity to work as part of a small group of students that designed and prototyped wireless sensor network nodes for IoT applications for precision agriculture.
What makes you most excited about wireless communications?
The future! Modeling, optimization and experimental evaluation of wireless networks in challenging environments such as underwater, in the sky and in space that will enable a rich body of applications with unprecedented societal impact.
Tell me about your most interesting research
accomplishment?
In 2017, my research team demonstrated for the first time for the U.S. Air Force, autonomously reconfigurable wireless mesh networks of software-defined radios that can efficiently (i) share the spectrum without interfering with co-existing links/networks and (ii) resist to jamming and cyberattacks.
What new developments and innovations can we expect to see in wireless communications in the next 5 years?
Artificial intelligence is anticipated to enable autonomous spectrum sharing and efficient spectrum utilization to address congestion in the air waves. In parallel, non-terrestrial wireless communications will allow more humans and machines (that either fly in the sky or lurk underwater) to get online.

I had a great experience working with OTD on the filing of my first provisional patent application with FAU. OTD has helped my team expedite the filing of all the required documents prior to the public disclosure of our research invention in a conference.
What is an interesting fact that people at FAU may not know about you?
I really enjoy good coffee (especially espresso).
