Friday, Mar 15, 2024

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine celebrated “Match Day” today, revealing the residency matches of Florida Atlantic’s fourth-year medical students who will soon advance to post-graduate training programs. As the 10th Match Day in the program’s history, our MedOwls joined thousands of future doctors across the country in learning where they will take their next step toward becoming practicing physicians.

Included in the Schmidt College of Medicine class of 2024 are several exemplary students who have been inducted into both the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the national medical honor society, and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a national honor society that recognizes senior medical students and others for excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.

Among these students are Sarah Girshfeld, who was matched for residency in emergency medicine at UC Davis Medical Center; Kaylynn Blackstad, who was matched for a triple board residency program in pediatrics/psychiatry/child psychiatry at the University of Kentucky Medical Center; and Oghosa Urhoghide, who was matched for an anesthesiology residency at Mass General Brigham – Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital.

As part of the Schmidt College of Medicine’s mission to address our state’s doctor shortage, 48 percent of the Class of 2024 will conduct their residency in Florida, with 41 percent specializing in primary care. The Class of 2024 also matched in highly competitive specialties including psychiatry, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, plastic surgery, urology and a triple board specialty in pediatrics/psychiatry/child psychiatry, among others.

Members of the Class of 2024 placed in several top institutions, including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center; UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles; Rush University Medical Center in Chicago; Baylor College of Medicine in Houston; New York-Presbyterian; and the University of Virginia.

Florida Atlantic’s own post-graduate residency programs matched 47 outstanding graduating medical students from various backgrounds throughout the nation in internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, psychiatry and neurology. Additionally, the University’s fellowships will welcome new trainees in cardiovascular disease, geriatric medicine, hospice and palliative medicine and vascular surgery.

We are immensely proud to celebrate the success of Florida Atlantic’s medical students each Match Day, and their consistent achievements are a testament to their extraordinary talents and unwavering commitment to their field. We also take great pride in welcoming the exceptional students and trainees who were matched with Florida Atlantic. I wish our future doctors all the best as they advance to the next phase of their training. Congratulations to the Schmidt College of Medicine Class of 2024!
