Tomorrow marks the beginning of national Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the history, culture and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latin Americans. Each year, Hispanic Heritage Month spans from September 15 to October 15. This year, the theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” I encourage everyone to celebrate by honoring and appreciating the many contributions of Hispanic/Latin Americans, who have played an irreplaceable role in U.S. history and enrich our society immensely.

Additionally, the start of Hispanic-Serving Institutions week began Monday, September 12, and will be observed until Sunday, September 18. As a designated HSI by the U.S. Department of Education, Florida Atlantic is one of the few universities in the nation to ensure success without any equity gaps based on race or ethnicity. FAU initiatives like the FUTUROS Success Program are helping our Hispanic/Latin Owls outpace the university’s overall retention and graduation rates by providing meaningful resources and services that support academic and career achievement.

Also this week, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine announced that FAU is a recipient of the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, which is granted to universities for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. FAU is very proud to serve one of the most diverse student populations in the country and we are honored to be recognized with this significant award.
