Family

At FAU, “family” is defined as anyone our students feel impacts their lives, through trust, love, and support. Adult family members who are interested in attending SOAR with their student(s) are strongly encouraged to do so. First-Year Family SOAR is held concurrently with the student program; parts of the family program are separate from the student program and some of the content is experienced together.

Family SOAR provides an opportunity to see and learn about FAU in a deeper way and make connections with university staff and other families. It also provides families with the tools to be of support to their new FAU student(s).

INFORMATION FOR FAU VISITORS AND GUESTS

FAU encourages all members of the community to avoid in-person meetings. However, face-to-face interactions are sometimes necessary. In advance of arriving on campus, please plan your arrival with University faculty and staff. Everyone on campus must adhere to FAU COVID-19 protocols and guidance.

As a family member with a summer or fall start student, you can participate in a three-phase experience:

Phase 1 - Virtual Orientation: Complete Virtual Family Orientation session through Canvas.
Students must complete their Virtual Orientation course on Canvas by June 25 for summer starts and August 20 for fall starts. Families have the option to partake in a Virtual Canvas Course (access is automatically given after reserving for the Family Orientation).

Phase 2 – Orientation Day

  • First-Year students starting in the summer will only have a Virtual (Basic) option.
  • First-Year students starting in the fall will have two options for their Orientation Day - Basic or Premium:
    • Basic Experience = 100% virtual:
      • $35 for students, $50 for families
    • Premium Experience = In-person Experience
      • $110 for students, $75 for families
      • $35 each for student pre-event (day prior to Day 1 of orientation) and overnight (night of Day 1) accommodations in residence hall
      • Individuals at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 (including older adults and people of all ages with certain underlying medical conditions) are encouraged to avoid in-person events and gatherings and participate in the virtual experience.
  • Families may reserve their Orientation with their student reservation at owldone.fau.edu. Reservations open March 8.

Phase 3 - Family Success Conference at How to FAU
How to FAU will fill in the gaps on everything your student needs to know to get started at FAU! Families are encouraged to attend the Family Success Conference that occurs during How to FAU. Families with students starting in the summer will attend virtually on Saturday, June 26 and on Saturday, August 21 (in-person).
