Florida Atlantic University has received a $1 million gift from the Levine Family Foundation to establish the Michael R. Levine AI-Enabled Hands-On Engineering Lab at the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The lab will offer students practical artificial intelligence experiences, with a focus on real-world challenges, applied learning and career readiness.

“The foundation is pleased to be joining with Florida Atlantic University to help train students at the forefront of AI technology innovation,” said Michael Levine, president of the Levine Family Foundation. “As AI becomes more integrated, it is even more important that students are prepared as they enter the workforce.”

The lab will give students the opportunity to develop skills using AI applicable to their educational and career goals. They will gain experience applying AI knowledge in practical settings, engaging with emerging technologies responsibly, and working closely with faculty on experiential learning projects.

“Preparing students to succeed in a rapidly changing world requires equipping them with the skills to lead in today’s workforce and the careers of tomorrow,” said FAU President Adam Hasner. “We appreciate the Levine Family Foundation’s vision and partnership in expanding opportunities for AI and innovation at Florida Atlantic.”

The lab will provide a purpose-built setting in which the faculty director will engage students in applied learning, mentoring, prototyping, as well as experiential projects through active and responsible use of AI in engineering practice. The lab is intended to strengthen student skill development and create opportunities for collaboration with other faculty, students and external partners to effectively amplify its impact over time.

Priority will be given to exchanges involving Israel, reflecting FAU’s role as host to the Florida-Israel Institute, established by the Florida legislature. These exchanges will broaden global perspectives, foster collaborative research and teaching, and strengthen educational opportunities for FAU students and faculty.

In recognition of the Levine Family Foundation’s gift, the College of Engineering and Computer Science will name the lab the Michael R. Levine AI-Enabled Hands-On Engineering Lab for the duration of the gift period.

“We are grateful to the Levine Family Foundation for supporting our students with an investment in student learning, mentoring and career readiness, and we are honored to recognize Michael R. Levine through a lab that will directly benefit our students,” said Stella Batalama, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
