Dr. Huang's Research


Dr. Xupei Huang received Medical Degree from Nanjing Medical University in China and a PhD degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics from University of Paris XII, France. For the past 20 years, Dr. Huang has carried out various research projects funded by the NIH and the American Heart Association to investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying heart diseases, in particular, cardiomyopathies. Dr. Huang’s research team is among the first in the world to create the transgenic mouse lines modeling the cardiac troponin mutations observed in human patients. Dr. Huang’s studies have demonstrated that impaired relaxation due to an increase myofibril sensitivity to calcium is the key manifestation in cardiomyopathic hearts. Green tea extract catechin is a useful desensitizing chemical that can be applied to both experimental animals and human patients with cardiomyopathy caused by troponin mutations. Dr. Huang’s team have published over 80 papers in various peer-reviewed academic journals. Dr. Huang has served as a grant reviewer for NIH study sections, VA review panels and AHA grant reviews. In addition, Dr. Huang is Associate Editor of the academic journal "Cardiology and Frontier in Pediatric Science".
