Men’s Health Month: A College Student’s Guide to Wellness
Tuesday, Jun 17, 2025
June is Men’s Health Month, a time to focus on the physical and mental well-being of men, especially college students navigating a busy and often stressful lifestyle. Prioritizing health now can set the foundation for a lifetime of wellness. Here are a few habits to adopt this month:
Be Active
Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining energy levels and reducing stress. Aim for at least 2 ½ hours of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or playing sports. Take advantage of Florida Atlantic’s track, fitness center, and intramural leagues.
Prioritize Sleep
Quality sleep is foundational to both physical and mental health. Strive for 7–9 hours per night to enhance memory, mood, and overall well-being. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can improve sleep quality.
Eat Nutritious Foods
A balanced diet supports optimal health and academic performance. Focus on consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid skipping meals and be mindful of portion sizes to maintain energy levels throughout the day.
Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is vital for cognitive function and physical performance. Aim to drink at least 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids daily, primarily from water. Carrying a reusable water bottle can serve as a constant reminder to stay hydrated.
Schedule Regular Check-Ups
Routine health screenings can detect potential issues early. Scott Harrison, a Registered Nurse at Florida Atlantic’s Student Health Services Clinic, recommends that students “take advantage of Florida Atlantic’s on-campus health clinic for annual check-ups and vaccinations.”
Break the Silence on Mental Health
Men often face societal pressures that discourage open discussions about mental health. However, acknowledging and addressing mental health is crucial. If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed, consider speaking with a counselor or mental health professional. Florida Atlantic offers confidential counseling services through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Florida Atlantic students also have access to a Mental Health Self-Help resource available through Welltrack Boost that you can find through the MyFAU App under the Health & Wellness section. Visit the CAPS website at www.fau.edu/counseling/ for more information.
This Men’s Health Month, take proactive steps to enhance your well-being. By integrating these habits into your daily routine, you can build a foundation for a healthier future. Remember, taking care of your health is not just about avoiding illness; it's about thriving in all aspects of life.
