Celebrating America 250
by President Adam Hasner | Thursday, Jul 02, 2026Dear Florida Atlantic Community,
This weekend we will celebrate the Fourth of July, marking a historic milestone as our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As we reflect on this extraordinary moment, we are reminded of the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that have shaped the American experience since 1776.
At Florida Atlantic, we are proud to preserve many of the original books, newspapers, pamphlets, and other documents that inspired our Founding Fathers or were written by them. The Marvin and Sybil Weiner Spirit of America Collection contains more than 13,000 rare items that helped define our nation, including a first edition, first printing of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense,” which is one of only 19 copies known to exist. The Alan B. and Charna Larkin American Presidential Study further tells the story of our country through a remarkable collection of letters signed by every U.S. president to date.
These special collections are on display at Florida Atlantic throughout the year, but the celebration of America 250 offers a meaningful opportunity to engage with our nation’s founding. I encourage everyone in our community to explore these national treasures and to reflect on the ideas, individuals, and events that not only established the United States but continue to shape it today.
As a reminder, the university will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. Florida Atlantic also will be closed on Monday, July 6, in observance of our nation’s semiquincentennial.
I hope you enjoy the extended holiday weekend. Best wishes for a safe and happy Independence Day.
Owls Up!
Adam Hasner
President
