Remembering the Holocaust

Friday, Jan 26, 2024

Tomorrow, Jan. 27, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this annual day of remembrance, we honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and condemn all instances of hate, intolerance or violence.

In commemoration of this day, Florida Atlantic’s Jewish Studies program and the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education will host a special event, Songs from Testimonies, featuring ethnomusicologist and Yiddish educator Zisl Slepovitch, Ph.D. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Florida Atlantic also is committed to educating students and the community about the lessons of the Holocaust throughout the year with several centers and programs. The future Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust and Jewish Studies Building, which was made possible by a historic $20 million gift from Kurt and Marilyn Wallach, will unite the initiatives once construction is complete. Additionally, it will memorialize the victims of the Holocaust, honor survivors and house special exhibitions from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

With the understanding that education is our best hope against hatred, Florida Atlantic remains strong advocates of the Jewish community and strives to provide a holistic and human-centered education to promote peace, justice and human rights for all. I encourage the University community to take time and reflect during International Holocaust Remembrance Day through events, education or other activities that honor and acknowledge victims and survivors.
