hispanic students

Today kicks off National Hispanic/Latina/o/x Heritage Month, the annual celebration of the history, heritage and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latin Americans. FAU will join the celebration by hosting a number of free in-person and virtual events through October 15, including discussions, salsa dance lessons, movie nights, and for the first time, a dominoes tournament. Click here for the full schedule of events.

I am very proud that FAU is one of the most diverse universities in the nation. As a U.S. Department of Education-designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, FAU is one of the few institutions without any equity gaps based on race or ethnicity. Initiatives like the FUTUROS Success Program are helping Hispanic/Latin students outpace the university’s overall retention and graduation rates, by providing support services and resources to prepare them for success here at FAU and in their future careers.

The 2021 National Hispanic Heritage Month theme is “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” I encourage everyone to take time to appreciate the traditions and contributions of Hispanic/Latin Americans, who have played an important role in our nation’s history and enriched our society and culture immeasurably.
