FAU Receives $1 Million Gift from FPL

Wednesday, Feb 22, 2023

I am pleased to share that Florida Atlantic has received a $1 million gift from Florida Power & Light Company through its charitable arm, the NextEra Energy Foundation, to establish the FPL Center for Intelligent Energy Technologies (InETech) in the FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science. As part of this commitment, FPL will engage in a four-year collaboration with the university to pursue research relating to smart technologies, products relevant to the energy sector and workforce development.

Additionally, the gift from the NextEra Energy Foundation enables the creation of the FPL InETech Center Scholarship, which will benefit undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. It also will support community outreach and K-12 activities that aim to spur interest and educate youth about the energy industry.

Previously, FPL and the NextEra Energy Foundation partnered with FAU on a seagrass nursery technology project to address Florida’s declining manatee population. The mission began in 2022 and continues today thanks to FPL’s three-year funding commitment to operate the nursery.

At Florida Atlantic, we take great pride in our partnerships with community and industry leaders. We truly appreciate this recent gift from FPL and NextEra Energy, which will support our bold vision to solve tomorrow’s challenges today while creating new opportunities for our students and faculty. I look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will have on FAU and the environment.
