Guidelines for Abstract Submission
Thank you for contributing to the 2026 Indian River Lagoon Symposium. Please review the information below carefully to ensure your submission and presentation process goes smoothly.
Submitting Your Abstract
- The link to submit your abstract will be included in your confirmation email after completing your Presenter Registration.
- Do not forward the submission link to others.
- Abstracts submitted without a completed Presenter Registration will not be considered.
- Be sure to follow all formatting and submission instructions provided below.
2026 Theme: Emerging Technology and Novel Methods
This year’s theme highlights how new tools and techniques are transforming research and restoration in the Indian River Lagoon. Presentations are encouraged on both groundbreaking innovations and creative applications of established methods.
A-IRL: Artificial intelligence applications in IRL research and restoration.
Molecular Methods: eDNA, genome skimming, and genomic tools for biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Statistical Innovations: New analytical frameworks for complex, multiscale datasets.
Sensors & Remote Tech: Advances in in situ sensors, AUVs, drones, and satellite technologies.
Novel Applications: Innovative uses of existing technologies in new or interdisciplinary ways.
Data Visualization: Tools that turn large datasets into clear, actionable visuals for communication and decision-making.
Biogeochemistry: Nutrient cycling, carbon dynamics, and related chemical processes in the lagoon.
Ecosystem services: Ecological, cultural, or economic benefits provided by lagoon systems.
Fisheries and living resources: Fish, shellfish, invertebrates, and other fauna, including their management.
Harmful algal blooms: Bloom dynamics, drivers, monitoring, and ecological or human impacts.
Human impacts: Effects of development, land use, pollution, and other anthropogenic stressors.
Policy and management: Governance, regulation, planning, and decision-making frameworks.
Restoration: Strategies, projects, and outcomes focused on habitat and ecosystem recovery.
Seagrasses and other submerged aquatic vegetation: Distribution, health, and ecology of seagrasses and related habitats.
Water quality: Physical, chemical, and biological parameters influencing lagoon condition.
Other: Topics relevant to the symposium not captured by the categories above.
General Presentation Guidelines
- All presentations must be created in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Use widescreen format (16:9) for the best display on the symposium’s AV system.
- Please adhere strictly to your time limits to help sessions stay on schedule.
10-Minute Oral Presentations
Preparing Your Talk
- Bring your presentation on a jump drive for transfer prior to your session.
- If you are in the first session, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. for loading (AV setup begins at 7:15 a.m.).
- If your file is small enough, you may email your PowerPoint in advance for pre-loading.
Timing
Each slot includes:
8 minutes for your talk
- 2 minutes for audience questions and discussion
- Please keep to your time limit to allow smooth transitions between speakers.
3-Minute Oral Presentations
Submitting Your File
- PowerPoint slides must be formatted in 16:9 widescreen.
- Email your presentation to irlsymposium@fau.edu by 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.
- You’ll receive a confirmation email once your file has been received.
During the Session
- You have three minutes total, beginning at the end of the moderator’s introduction.
- There will be no Q&A following these presentations.
- Speakers will be seated near the front of the auditorium to minimize transition time.
- Please rehearse and time your talk carefully—sessions move quickly!
Staying on Schedule
The symposium will run on a tight timeline, and all presenters are expected to stay within their allotted time. Your preparation and punctuality help ensure a smooth, engaging experience for everyone.
