Celebrating Ocean Science for a Better World®:
2021 marks the 50th Anniversary of our relentless pursuit of Ocean Science for a Better World®. Founded in the spirit of ocean exploration, Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is driven by a rich history of world-class research dedicated to marine ecosystem conservation, ocean and human health, aquaculture innovation and food security, technological innovation and national defense.
In 1971, J. Seward Johnson Sr., heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, founded a research institution for marine scientists and engineers with the help of his long-time friend, famed inventor Edwin A. Link. Located along the largest privately owned deepwater channel in Florida, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Inc. originally focused on deep-sea exploration and creating the technology to safely send scientists to new depths.
In 2007, Harbor Branch joined Florida Atlantic University, further expanding the reach of our programs to over 100 miles along Florida’s east coast. Today, FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is a trusted leader and expert resource for marine science research, conservation and education.
We invite you to join us as we celebrate where we came from, where we’ve been and where we plan to go—FAU Harbor Branch: 50 years of Ocean Science for a Better World®.
We want to help the world. More than 70% of the Earth’s surface is ocean. Our weather, our food, our very lives are dependent on the ocean.”
