Welcome to the Department of Theatre and Dance website at Florida Atlantic University. We are currently in our 46th season of outstanding theatre training. Located in beautiful Boca Raton, Florida - the heart of South Florida’s theatre district, the Department of Theatre and Dance has at its disposal the bountiful resources of the vast metroplex. Established in 1974, the theatre M.F.A. programs were one of two programs singled out for excellence in the University’s re-accreditation in 2002. In 2003 Theatre joined with Music and Art to form the School of the Arts promoting interaction among the arts at FAU and acknowledging the arts at FAU as a major component of the University’s mission in South Florida. In 2008 dance joined theatre, and became an integral part of the department.
Our faculty, which maintains ongoing involvement with the professional world, is comprised of “working” directors, designers, actors, dancers, and choreographers, offering expertise and passion for the creation and craft of theatre and dance. Our strengths lie in the carefully selected blending of professional and academic training designed to prepare our graduates for successful careers as practicing artists, technicians and scholars in the theatre of the 21st Century. Ours is a competitive program that encourages participation of all of our students in every facet of producing theatre. Our objective is to stimulate curiosity, develop intellectual acuity, cultivate the imagination and encourage creative expression. Each year the Department of Theatre and Dance stages productions in a variety of genres and styles to familiarize our students with the full range of theatre experience. Through the vehicle of staged performance we endeavor to provoke, excite, examine values, question beliefs and conventions, challenge assumptions and of course to entertain.
Our Summer Rep. program, which typically includes popular fare, classics and/or musicals, allows students to earn Equity points while working with and learning from professional actors and other seasoned artists and technicians. Our students have become successful actors, directors, designers, writers, teachers and theatre professionals. Through campus and community outreach, our aim is to remain sensitive to societal issues through multidisciplinary and multicultural approaches, and to augment lifelong learning opportunities for South Florida citizens of all ages. We invite you to join us as our exciting tradition continues! It is both joyously hard work, and authentically serious fun.
Thank you for visiting our website. Please feel free to contact us at any time regarding our undergraduate and graduate degree programs, our production seasons, or simply to share thoughts and comments.
See you at the theatre!
