Today, the sixth class of physicians celebrated their graduation from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine with a virtual ceremony. The journey for these 63 graduates began in 2016, when up against an amazing set of odds, they were selected from nearly 4,300 applicants.

More than half the Class of 2020 will start their residency program in a state that is currently considered a hotspot for COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seven graduates are headed to New York; others will be going to New Jersey, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana and Texas. More than one-third of the class will remain in Florida their residency.

The class of 2020 also placed in several top institutions nationally, including Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta; University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor; Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Washington, D.C; New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center; Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis; Children's Hospital, Los Angeles; and Nationwide Hospital, Columbus.

Never before in the history of our nation have physicians been in higher demand. As each of our graduates enters the front lines in the fight against the pandemic, I know that everyone here at FAU will be cheering them on.

Congratulations to our newest Owl Doctors! We are very proud of you!
