In 2015, the FAU Board of Trustees and I created a strategic plan that featured neuroscience as one of four key research pillars. Our goal was to become a leader in neurological and mental health research and education. Fortunately, in 2016, we were able to convince world-renowned neuroscientist Randy Blakely, Ph.D., to join FAU as executive director of the newly created FAU Brain Institute. Dr. Blakely arrived at FAU with a vision to build a world-class neuroscience research organization by recruiting the very best scientists and enhancing our technology and facilities. The 2020 issue of MasterMinds, the FAU Brain Institute’s annual report, provides an update on how our investments in these areas have paid off over the past three years.

The FAU Brain Institute supports the research and educational activities of more than 100 faculty-level neuroscience investigators who seek to unlock the secrets of brain development and function, as well as devastating brain disorders. Dr. Blakely and his hard-working staff are driving FAU’s Brain Institute to be at the front line of understanding and treating disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, depression and Alzheimer’s disease, while preparing the next generation of researchers for success, and educating our community on mental health.
