About the Program

Honors College students interested in ocean engineering can pursue a joint Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree at the Honors College and a Master’s of Science degree in Ocean Engineering through the College of Engineering and Computer Science (COECS). Students complete the prerequisite coursework for the master’s degree while at the Wilkes Honors College in their first 4 years, and can complete the master’s coursework in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Many of the prerequisite COECS courses are available online.

What are the Steps and Requirements for Applying to the Program?

  • Have a cumulative FAU GPA of 3.25 or better at the end of the junior year at FAU Wilkes Honors College. Note that the cumulative FAU GPA of at least 3.25 must be maintained until the completion of the bachelor’s degree at the Wilkes Honors College.
  • Completion of all required prerequisite coursework to meet the eligibility requirements for the MS program.
  • Students in the combined program may count up to 9 credits of approved graduate coursework (5000 level or higher) toward both their bachelor's and master's degrees. These graduate courses will replace the upper-level elective courses in the bachelor’s program.
  • The combined program should total a minimum of 150 credits, that is 120 credits for the bachelor’s degree and 30 credits (5000 level or higher) for the master’s program.
  • Students may apply for the Graduate College Pathways Scholarship. For details about the scholarship and to apply online, go to fau.edu/graduate/pathways.php .
  • Submit an admission application through the Graduate College.
  • Formally apply to the combined program, completing the admission process at least one semester prior to the beginning of the MS portion of the program.
  • Students may opt for the thesis or non-thesis option in their M.S. degree.
  • Students must retain their enrollment in order to remain in the program.

How Long Does the Program Take to Complete?

Students need to complete at least 30 credits for both thesis and non-thesis options of the master's program. Students are able to finish within one year if they are enrolled as a full-time student.
