Degree Requirements for Major | for Minor

Major Requirements
Students pursing a B.A. degree in political science must fulfill the following requirements.

1. All baccalaureate degree requirements, which include:

  • Earn a minimum of 120 credits in academic courses acceptable toward the degree. Attain a minimum 2.0 GPA in the courses required for a major program at FAU.
  • Earn a minimum of 45 of these 120 credits at the upper divisions as indicated by the Statewide Course Numbering System (SCNS) designations or their equivalents.
  • Apply no more than 60 credits of non-traditional credit toward the degree earned through Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Correspondence Courses, International Baccalaureate (IB), or Military Service Schools.
  • Earn the last 30 upper-division credits in residence at FAU.
  • Earn at least 50 percent of all upper-division courses in the major department from FAU.
  • Fulfill the core curriculum or general education requirements as appropriate to the student’s admission status.
  • Summer Credit Requirement: earn a minimum of nine credits by attending one or more summer terms at FAU or another state of Florida institution. This requirement applies only to students admitted to FAU as freshmen or as transfer students with fewer than 60 credits. Credits earned through Advanced International Certificate in Education (AICE), AP, CLEP or IB program may be applied toward the nine credit summer requirement.
  • Satisfy Gordon Rule requirements.
  • Complete the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) with passing scores appropriate to the time the test is taken for the first time.
  • Fulfill the admission and graduation requirements of the department and college granting the degree as described separately below.
  • Fulfill the foreign language graduation requirement.
  • Submit an Application Degree form.

2. Political science requirements, which include:

  • Complete 36 credits in political science courses with a grade of “C” or better. A minimum of 33 credits of these 36 credits must be upper-division (3000/4000 level). Note that no more than two 1000-level and three 2000-level courses may count in the last 60 credits for the B.A. degree.
  • General Political Science Requirements: The following three courses are required of all majors:

  • Political Science Electives: A minimum of nine additional courses are to be selected from the courses offered within the department. Of these nine courses, a minimum of three courses must be from the field of American Politics and Political Theory, and a minimum of two courses must be from the field of World Politics.

  • Students who enter Florida Atlantic University with less than 30 credits must complete Introductory Statistics (STA 2023).

Minor Requirements
A Minor in Political Science requires a minimum of 15 credits (nine of which must be taken at FAU) in political science courses, including POS 2041 (The Government of the U.S.) or equivalent, and four upper-division courses (12 credits) with a grade of “C” or better.
