ALAN B. AND CHARNA LARKIN SYMPOSIUM ON THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY

The annual Alan B. and Charna Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency supports public lectures by best-selling authors and notable speakers. It also funds a conference every three years of distinguished scholars that brings some of the most accomplished historians and political scientists to Florida Atlantic University. In past years we have hosted David Halberstam, Daniel Ellsberg, Madeleine Albright, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, David McCullough, Michael Beschloss, and Eugene Robinson.

Presentations from the symposium are published by the University Press of Florida in its new American Presidency Series, edited by History Department faculty member Stephen D. Engle. Since its inception, the Larkin conferences have produced 4 books including: Selling War in a Media Age: the Presidency and Public Opinion in the American Century; Winning While Losing: Civil Rights, the Conservative Movement, and the Presidency from Nixon to Obama; The War Worth Fighting: Abraham Lincoln’s Presidency and Civil War America; The President and American Capitalism Since 1945.

The symposium is held each spring semester, typically in February around President’s Day weekend. The Alan B. and Charna Larkin Endowed Fund also supports a graduate fellowship each year.
