Dr. Kenneth Holloway’s first book Guodian: The Newly Discovered Seeds of Chinese Religious and Political Philosophy was published by Oxford University Press in January 2009. Guodian is the name of a tomb in China that dates from 300 BCE. The tomb contained a wealth of manuscripts that advocate the harmonious interconnection of individuals through moral self-cultivation. These texts cannot meaningfully be categorized as “Confucian” or “Daoist” since these categories are incompatible with the theme of unity prevalent in Guodian. In addition, Dr. Holloway has published articles in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, Jianbo yanjiu 简帛研究 (Bamboo and Silk Research), and Rujia wenhua yanjiu 儒家文化研究 (Confucian Culture Studies). He is currently working on his second manuscript The Quest for Morality in Early China, which will continue challenging preconceptions that have long obscured our understanding of religion’s early formation in China. This project will focus on the text “Nature Emanates from Names” 性自命出, which was found in the recently discovered Guodian and Shanghai manuscripts.
