About the South Florida Environmental Ethics Consortium

Founded in 2000, the South Florida Environmental Ethics Consortium (SFEEC) is a project of the Ethics Programs of the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethic and the Public Trust.

Public policy deliberations raise values issues as well as economic impact and technical questions. Too often these are treated as distinct rather than overlapping and mutually informing. The aim of the South Florida Environmental Ethics Consortium (SFEEC) is to bring diverse communities into dialogue on values issues relating to the human and the natural environments, and to develop resources that attend to the ethical opportunities and challenges in environmental public policy.

The annual environmental ethics conference, now in its sixth year, is a collaborative regional effort to link educational institutions, governmental agencies, nongovernmental agencies, advocacy groups and communities. Researchers and educators from diverse disciplines – philosophy, history, law, urban planning, public health, science – have exchanged ideas with community members, students, lawyers, public employees and others in non-partisan, educational settings. Participating academic institutions include the University of Miami Ethics Programs, Florida Atlantic University, Miami-Dade College, Nova Southeastern University, Florida A&M University, University of Florida, Florida International University, Broward County Community College, Barry University, and St. Thomas University. In the past, featured speakers have included government officials, academics, representatives of non-government organizations, community members and those in environmentally related professions. Speakers have ranged from Barry E. Hill, Esq., Director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice, to the artist Michael Singer, a sculptor and designer known for his environmentally conscious projects.

This year’s conference is made possible by additional support from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the Catanese Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, the FAU John Daily Institute of Government, the Florida Atlantic Planning Society, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida Atlantic University, and the Adelaide R. Snyder Professorship in Ethics.
